Poppies have been used as a symbol of both sleep and death throughout the ages.
They symbolize sleep because of the effects commonly felt from the opium that can extracted from them. The are often used as emblems on tombstones to symbolize eternal sleep. The Wonderful Wizard of Oz borrowed on this symbolisn to create magical poppy fields, dangerous because they caused those who passed through them to sleep forever.
While death can sometimes result from the use of opium, that’s symbol of death actually comese from their blood-red color. Poppies were used as offerings to the dead in Greco-Roman myths, the symbolism of the bright scarlet color interpreted as the promise of resurrection after death.
